Real Men of God

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time I Peter 5:6

What does it take to be a man of God? It's apparent by the words of Peter it is something opposite than what the world teaches.

Like many men, I enjoy watching sports, but that enjoyment has been lessened by the proliferation of "trash talking" sports stars who "get in the face" of opponents. Men taunting each other and priding themselves in their physical abilities have become role models for our young people, so it's no surprise we are seeing this type of behavior even on the Little League field. But this is not what God has deemed to be his ideal of manhood.

I think Peter would completely understand both sides of this issue. From what I've read about him, he was quick to boast (see John 13:36-37 and Luke 22:33) and quick to take action (see John 18:10). Yet, in his message to church leaders both young and old, he places humility as the trait they should all seek.

The humble spirit is a rare one indeed in this day and age, but this is exactly the spirit God calls for in men who call upon his name. The prophet Micah put it this why:

He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)
Not exactly what the world would consider to be a man, but what a true man really is.

How does one learn to do this? By acknowledging Jesus as Lord and learning from His example. This is what Peter did, and this is what we must do if we too are to be men of God.
